1966 Australian Silver Round 50c Coin on Presentation Card (aUNC)
Description
1966 Australian Silver Round 50c Coin on Presentation Card (aUNC)
Althrough the introduction of decimal coinage in 1966 was a major success, the changeover brought with it one of the most controversial coins in numismatics - Australia's first 50c piece.
The highest denomination coin in 1966, Australia's first 50c originally came under fire due to its shape. As the 50c and 20c were both round and about the same size. The two coins were easily confused, and complaints flooded in. More controversy followed, when rising silver prices saw the intrinsic value of the coin far outstrip the face value. Subsequently hoarded in huge numbers, millions of 1966 50c coins were melted for the silver.
