Description
2020 $5 1oz Silver Proof Coin - 75th Anniversary of the End of WWII
In 2020 the Royal Australian Mint marks the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War with this 2020 $5 silver proof coin commemorating the hopes of peace, and in remembrance of all Australians who served.
On 2 September 1945 Japanese officials formally surrendered to the Allied nations, ending the Second World War. It had been the deadliest conflict in human history. Almost one million Australians served in the war, and almost 40,000 lost their lives in the fight against European fascism and Japanese aggression. The end of the war brought in a new hope for peace and recovery.
This commemorative coin features a woman releasing doves, representing peace, and origami cranes: a reference to the Children’s Peace Monument in Hiroshima, Japan. The woman’s hair and garments fall to resemble a wreath wrapping each side of the coin. The coin’s design represents the triumph of peace over war, and solemnly commemorates those who fell during the Second World War.
