2020 New Zealand - Kiwi Silver 2oz High Relief
Each year New Zealand Post issues coins honouring the unique Kiwi bird. We are pleased to present the 2020 Kiwi 2 oz Silver High Relief coin.
The 2020 Kiwi coin design depicts the Apteryx rowi. Before human settlement of New Zealand, rowi were widespread throughout the northern South Island and into the southern North Island, as far north as Hawkes Bay. Currently rowi is the species in danger of extinction, with only one natural population of about 600 rowi that reside in Ōkārito forest and surrounds in the South Island.
Most chicks are killed by stoats shortly after they are hatched, which is the main threat of their survival. In 1994 Operation Nest Egg began, which is a true benefit for rowi existence. Now that the rowi population has increased almost fourfold from 160 birds in 1995, new attempts are being made to reduce stoat numbers in the wild to levels that allow rowi chicks to survive in their normal family structure.
This precious coin has been minted in high relief from .999 silver and ennobled with gold and ruthenium plating.
The obverse design is the portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The reverse design is Apteryx rowi with five koru, which represents five kiwi species found in New Zealand.
Limited worldwide mintage of 700 pieces.
